The Silver Ski Rockets picked up their first, and well-deserved, away match point in the Premier League in a battling 48-42 defeat at Redcar.

Following on from Edward Kennett’s blistering displays the night before against Peterborough, it was the turn of Steve Boxall to claim the spotlight – and he did just that with four unbeaten rides in a magnificent paid 16 haul. Kennett also powered into double figures, with Garrity adding a race win and the remaining regular Rockets all chipping in valuable points. Rye House guest Aaron Fox – in for knee injury victim Jason Bunyan – was, though, unable to open his account.

The Rockets produced two 5-1s in their display, both from Garrity and Boxall. The first arrived in Heat 3, with Carl Wilkinson and Mark Lemon the victims, to level the early score at 9-9. The second came in Heat 10, with Hugh Skidmore and the Bears’ main man Richard Lawson relegated to the back this time, to bring Rye back to 32-28 at a crucial stage of the match.

The two teams then traded 4-2s, to leave Redcar in front 44-40 heading into the decider. Boxall’s second place in that one, behind Lawson but ahead of Summers, duly made sure of a vital match point for the Rockets – and also set the stage for Saturday’s huge clash against championship favourites Edinburgh at Hoddesdon.

Rye House team manager John Sampford was upbeat afterwards. “It was a real battling display from the team. Steve (Boxall) was simply brilliant tonight, while Edward Kennett was the real deal in four of his six races.

“Ultimately, the Bears just had the edge on us. They had a full team, who all contributed, while all of our regular team contributed – but we also had to use rider replacement and a guest.

“In fairness to Aaron Fox, we were asking him as a reserve to do a second string’s job. But the rest of the team all did their bit points-wise.”
