BAD TIME IN BANDIT COUNTRY
Saturday August 23, 2014
The Silver Ski Rockets remain without an away match point to their name in the 2014 Premier League after limping to a hefty 63-32 defeat at high-flying Berwick.

It was a strange looking Rye side that took to the track at Shielfield Park; one reinforced with two guests and Rider-Replacement due to the absence of Jason Garrity (prior Elite League commitment), Luke Bowen elbow injury) and Anders Mellgren (departure from British Speedway).

The Bandits showed little sympathy, however, rattling off no less than ten 5-1s as they generally controlled the first bend, and leaving the Rockets to thank Steve Boxall for providing a modicum of respectability to the final score-line. The Boxmeister rebounded from his recent ankle injury with two excellent race wins - and Rye made the most of both, with guest Mason Campton holding off a persistent Kevin Doolan for second spot behind Boxall to ensure a Rockets 5-1 in Heat 7 and a 6 point Tactical outing from the Kent star setting up a 7-2 some two races later.

Rye House team manager John Sampford admitted afterwards, “Tonight was all about trapping, and Berwick totally dominated us in that respect. Steve rode his guts out to try to stem the tide, although he twisted his right ankle again. He is confident that he will be OK for tomorrow night’s return match, though, because the track will be much smoother and therefore less of a factor for him.

“Now, it’s all about re-grouping during the long drive south, and starting afresh again, so that we can show that we are a different proposition on a different track.”

The Rockets will have that opportunity as they face the Bandits a second time tomorrow, with a 6pm – evening - start time scheduled in Hoddesdon. Jason Garrity will return to the Blue and Yellow for that one.
