NORTHERN HOPES HEAD SOUTH
Saturday August 03, 2013
Mixed fortunes in the two halves of the match left the Silver Ski Rockets nursing a respectable, but ultimately decisive, 54-40 defeat from the first stop of their short northern tour at Workington.

Four 5-1s in the first seven races quickly wrapped up the result for the home side, at 29-13, although the Rockets settled down over the remaining races, with a maximum from guest Josh Grajczonek and Pontus Aspgren in Heat 13 – after Jason Bunyan had initially been excluded for a tapes infringement – helping them reach the 40 point mark.

Aspgren enjoyed a race win of his own, with two further visiting successes achieved by Anders Mellgren, who top-scored for the night with 14, ahead of Aspgren (9+1), Bunyan and Grajczonek (both 8+1).

Rye House team manager John Sampford admitted afterwards that “It took a long time for us to find our set-ups and get going. Only Jason Bunyan really did that early on.

“I know that this sounds contradictory, but although the track was good, even with all the dirt on it was still slick. That made gating absolutely essential, and we really didn’t manage that until the second half of the match. We were much better as the meeting progressed, however. To prove that point, we actually out-scored the Comets 27-25 from Heat 8 onwards.”

The Rockets will be hoping for better fortune when they complete their short tour at Glasgow tomorrow (Sunday).
