ROCKETS 53 SHEFFIELD 42
Saturday July 20, 2013
The Silver Ski Rockets completed a clean sweep of four League and Cup victories over the Tigers – this time the Sheffield variety – in the second half of Saturday’s double header.
Four consecutive 5-1s from Heats 3 through 6 did all the damage, as the Rockets pulled away from an early 6-6 tie to a convincing 26-10. Two of those maximums were secured by the dynamic duo of Tyson Nelson and Anders Mellgren, and the pair achieved the same score together two further times later on in the match for a perfect tandem showing.
It was as well that the Rockets enjoyed their tremendous early surge, as a six point Tactical ride from guest Josh Auty in Heat 11 and a follow-up 5-1 from Ricky Wells and James Sarjeant over the otherwise unbeaten Mellgren suddenly put a different complexion on the chase for the final match point by taking the score from a comfortable 40-22 to a far closer 43-34 in the space of just two races.
A Steel City 4-2 followed in Heat 14 as Nelson’s personal maximum hopes were also ended by Wells, leaving the Rockets needing a shared result from the final race to claim all three points. They achieved that result, and much more, as Mellgren made a lightning start and Nelson quickly fought his way past both Auty and Wells to join him at the front.
While Nelson and Mellgren made the final headlines, captain Jason Bunyan also delivered another very strong display, being beaten only by Sheffield Andre Compton in Heat 8, while Pontus Aspgren took his tally of wins for the night up to six with a couple of early victories.
