ROCKETS SUFFER STING IN TAIL
Friday July 12, 2013
The Silver Ski Rockets had to be content with a second away Premier League match point as a late Scunthorpe fight-back saw them pipped 47-46.
The determination and momentum from the previous night’s battling Cup result at Redcar clearly segued into the Lincolnshire action – albeit this time with a far more all-rounded scoring performance - as The Rockets gradually built up what appeared a decisive advantage. They produced some four 5-1s along the way, with the last secured by Jason Bunyan and guest Grajczonek in Heat 11 to push the score to 38-28.
That margin enabled the Scorpions to name Lewis Blackbird as a Tactical nomination in the next race and the white-hot reserve did not disappoint, with his victory securing a 6-3 for the home side. Two further home heat advantages followed, to leave the Rockets nursing a 44-43 lead heading into the finale.
And what a race that proved, with Tyson Nelson and Anders Mellgren making the gate, only for the Swede to be passed by Ashley Birks and Josh Auty. Nelson still held sway until the very last bend, however, before Auty found a way inside to take the chequered flag for the narrowest of personal successes – and the narrowest of Scunthorpe victories. It was the only time that they had led all night.
Despite the way that the match had turned, Rye House promoter Len Silver was still upbeat afterwards. “It was an incredible meeting. There is no doubt that Lewis Blackbird was their match winner and that the night turned on his astounding Tactical ride in Heat 12. But we certainly deserved more than one point; it was the three point Tactical ride that ultimately made the difference. It was the story of our lives.
“All the boys rode really well, and I am really proud of them. Unfortunately, we lost Simon Lambert, who had to withdraw after three falls in his two races. He suffered a number of cuts and bruises, and he won’t be fit in time for tomorrow’s home match against Edinburgh. Ben Morley will take his place for that one.â€
