ROCKETS TEAR INTO TIGERS
Saturday April 20, 2013
The Silver Ski Rockets faced few obstacles in piling up a huge 37 point advantage to take with them to Scotland for tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon’s second leg in this Knock-Out Cup tie.

Thirteen heat wins and twelve race advantages – including no less than eight maximum results – tell much of the story of a one-sided 63-26 result, with all six Rockets paid for at least two wins and nine points. Jason Garrity led the way with five straight heat wins and dropped his only points when surprisingly last in Heat 15. Kasper Lykke was unbeaten after his first ride in contributing a season best paid 16, while Olly Allen won his first three outings – the third with a cracked frame – before slipping to third place in Heat 13 as the crack widened. (Dave King of King Silencers came to the rescue by agreeing to weld the frame directly after the match so that Allen would be able to depart with it for Ashfield.)

Elsewhere, Anders Mellgren recovered from an opening race exclusion to make it six out of six in the double figures department for the year. He also featured in the stand-out race of the night when stalking James Wright for the duration of Heat 12 before finally slipping inside his adversary on the very last bend to claim the victory. Tyson Nelson added a dramatically produced 11+1, while Ben Morley secured an excellent paid 9 that was highlighted by a great ride to outpace the experienced James Grieves and Australian prospect Harley Horwood in Heat 6.

The Tigers had little to offer in resistance save for Wright’s victory in Heat 7 and a surprise result in the final race when the same rider and Joe Screen shocked Mellgren and Garrity for the 5-1 that gave the Scots their only race advantage of the night.

The Rockets will have 2012 Raider James Sarjeant as their guest for the injured Simon Lambert in the second leg as they aim to seal a second round tie against Sheffield.

Events some 203 miles away gave the Rockets a double reason to celebrate on Saturday night. The Plymouth Devils won their first match of the season, taking all three match points in a 48-41League Cup victory over Somerset to offer Rye renewed hope of progress in that competition. The Rebels have finished their group matches with ten points, one ahead of Ipswich and two of Rye. The group’s top spot will therefore be settled from its final two matches, with the Rockets able to leapfrog Somerset if they claim all three match points against Plymouth at Hoddesdon next Saturday (April 27th @ 7pm) and the Witches then slip up in their match against the same opposition.
