Saturday February 10, 2018
The 2018 season is closer than you might think. It unofficially gets underway as early as next Sunday (February 18th) with the annual staging of the Celebration of Speedway at nearby Paradise Wildlife Park in Broxbourne – and the BMR Rockets will once again be there as part of the festivities.

The event, organised by the World Speedway Riders’ Association, will this year mark the 90th anniversary of the very first meeting in Britain, which was staged at High Beech, near Loughton, in February 1928.

7-times British Champion Scott Nicholls, British Bulldog Ben Barker and Rye House new arrival Max Clegg are set to be on the Rye House stand. Co-Promoter Steve Jenson and Team Manager Peter Schroeck will be there too.

Presenter and media man Craig Saul is set to grab words with as many as possible in the both the revamped Events Marquee and the BMR display zone during the course of the day.

As in previous years, the Celebration will feature indoor and outdoor bike displays, racing leathers, trophies and a collectors’ fair. Former Edinburgh and Wembley star Bert Harkins will be signing copies of his new autobiography, “My Crazy Speedway World”, while Hackney legend – and 1987 Rocket – Barry Thomas will be formally launching his own book, the appropriately titled “ThommoHawk.”

Kelvin Tatum will be receiving the chains of office as 2018 WSRA President from current incumbent Neil Middleditch, while the Daily Mail National Trophy will also be on view. Additionally, there will be what can only be described as a VERY SPECIAL display on show in the National Speedway Museum which is housed on site at Paradise Wildlife Park. The museum will be open throughout the day.

Entry to the Celebration of Speedway will be £10 (which will include a 10% donation to the WSRA charity) to assist WSRA expenses. As Paradise Wildlife Park will be open to the public as usual that day, there will be a separate entrance for the Speedway Exhibition, but your donation will still entitle you to visit the Wildlife Park with its hundreds of animals.

Additionally, the day’s raffle will include top prizes of two tickets for the Cardiff Grand Prix, kindly donated by BSI Speedway.

The event formally starts at 11am. The Wildlife Park is well signposted from the A10, but the post code for Sat-Nav purposes is EN10 7QA.
